Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has submitted an application to become the owner of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs were put on the market in April soon after billionaire Sam Zell bought the Tribune Company. Zell already owns parts of the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox.
While I’m not a huge Cuban fan because of his antics on and off the court, and his apparent hatred for all authority in the NBA I think he is a good owner. He has turned the Mavericks from perennial losers into one of the top 5 franchises in the NBA. He brings in the players needed to get into the playoffs and to be a contender year in and year out. He loves his players and has made basketball a contender for affections of even die-hard Cowboys fans. I think he would be a great fit for the team from the north side.
Unfortunately, I don’t think he will become the new owner of the Cubs. Commissioner Bud Selig is not going to want to have a character such as Cuban owning a major league team. NBA Commissioner David Stern may be the most powerful man in sports and Cuban has no problems with attacking Stern, and he would have no problems attacking Selig if he felt the need to. It is a long shot for Cuban, but I think it would be a great idea.
