A few hours before Barry Bonds hit #755 last night (don’t worry I’ll write about #756) Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player to ever hit 500 home runs in a 16-8 drubbing of the Kansas City Royals. Rodriguez is 330 days younger than Jimmie Foxx (32 years 338 days) was when he reached 500.
Rodriguez seems to have the best opportunity to reach Bonds once he passes Aaron. He is well ahead of the pace set by both Aaron and Bonds, and at only 32 should have about 5 good years left before starting to fade. If Bonds ends up with 780 home runs we could be seeing Rodriguez nearing that mark before he reaches 40.
History says that most home run hitters fade as they get older. Foxx only hit 34 more home runs after 500, but many say Foxx’s career tailspin was due to drinking. Rodriguez seems to have few problems outside of his wife, and even few stories about steroid use. A new book from Jose Canseco is supposed to change that, and we will have to see if Rodriguez can shoulder that in New York.
Other News:
- Barry Bonds did hit home run #755 last night in San Diego. He now stands one shy of the all-time mark. Like I said earlier I will write about #756.
- San Diego Padres P David Wells has been hit with a $5,000 fine from the commissioner for comments he made last month that led to a suspension and $3,000 fine.
I wouldn’t say A-Rod’s problem is “his wife” exactly, but the way he deals with his *marriage.* Unless you know something I don’t know?

Yeah I probably should have said “marriage.” His wife did wear that t-shirt which probably did not help things with the NY media. I know probably as much as you do about A-Rod’s marriage.
